Can I tell you a secret?
Field Log #017 — Menachap Echo

The Lake Storey Nights

Notes recorded near the North Shore Trail

Older locals remember a story that doesn’t like the light: a theatre audience, a blackout, and eyes in the dark. The names surface in clipped whispers—Heche, Angela, the Silberlings, Sgt. Brock, Capt. Donovan—then vanish again. No one agrees on the ending. Maybe there wasn’t one.

I came to the lake because callers on WGIL kept using the same phrase, the one people say right before they go missing: “Can I tell you a secret?”

If you’ve walked the wooded edges after 10pm, you know the feeling: the phone won’t focus, the wind turns to breath, and something red watches from the line of trees.
